by: Malcolm Gladwell

Middle class parents are partially there and as for lower class, their children are stronged will because of their situations so they feel they dont need the extra support. With the helps of Annette Lareau, Gladwell goes more into depth about household parent an how it effects the student as a whole.

" Outliers "
( The Story of Success )
by Malcolm Gladwell

Chunk #1

Gladwell begins his nonfiction novel " Outliers" by providing a story about what encouraged him to write about success and how people become successdul. He defines an outliers as " something that is situated away from or classed differently from a main or related body . . . a statistical observation that is markedly different in value from the others of 6he sample." Throughout the first chunkhe provides various anedotes to support his thesis that no one hasa become successful without a support background. In otherwords , there's no such this as "coming from nothing to something". Gladwell use of anecdotal evidence to support his claim helps keep him credible as a writer.

The Bedford Reader
“But What Do You Mean?” by Deborah Tannen

“But What Do You Mean?” by Deborah Tannen is a series of reasonings for why men and when often encounter miscommunications. She is under the impression that man and women communicate badly because they “have different ideas about what’s appropriate… [And they also have] different ways of speaking…women often mistake men’s teasing as genuinely hostile [and] men often mistake women’s mock self-depracation as truly putting themelves down” Tannen includes subtitled sections into her essay all describing actions that lead up to miscommunication between the opposite sex. She expresses this to her audience by providing a series of sample conversations to allow the reader to witness the conversations between male and female. She states, She also incorporates a myriad of anecdotes in order to provide a visual for the reader. FAST FOOD NATiON ( post #3 - what's in the meat )

Concluding the non-fiction novel Fast Food Nation, Schlosser reveals all the secrets about the packaged meat and what is hidden inside. He finally begins to talk about the deadly disease Escherichia coli O157:H7, " a virulent and potientially lethal foodbourne pathogen " . He immediately gives many examples about violent cases of E. coli O157:h7 break outs. While discussing the case of Lee Harding , an innocent individual who was infected by the E. coli O157:H7 virus, they discover that this deadly pathogen is rarely found in chicken and more often found in beef , which is the number one source in fast food restaurants. He also says " Children under the age of five, the elderly, and the people with impaired immune systems are the most likely to suffer from illnesses caused by E. coli O157:H7 .He then gives an example of how infected beef is distributed in school cafeterias running the risk of infecting innocent children . As an example he tells about an 11 year old boy who became sick aftereating a hamburger at school . The meat processing company from which the meat came from confirmed the presence of the E. coli virus in their meat. It was reported that the meat processing plant was so filthy that inspectors withdrew an appointed inspection. Ironically , the the company's owner ( Frank Bauer ) committed suicide the next day. " Throughout discussing this deadly virus Schlosser also touches upon other deadly pathogens such as Salmonella , Listeria monocytogenes , Staphylococcus aureus , and Clostridium perfringens , which are pathogens which can possibly hospitalize and make an individual seriously ill . Leaving this topic in the air , Schlosser begans to talk about americanized countries such as Germany . These countries are known for franchizing different fast food restaurants and adopting the same habits as Americans.

FAST FOOD NATiON ( post # 2 )

In the second half of Fast Food Nation , Scholesser discusses how many fast food restaurants approach their employees. He begins talk about how these fast food corporations generally target teenage employers so that only minimum wage is "cashed out " . Most americans can relate to that topics because many of our local fast food restaurants are infested with teenager. He goes into more detail about the other types of people these vendors target such as elderly people and immigrants because they assume these types of people won't complain about the pay they recieve. Not only did he speak about the people they approach but he also touches upon the environment these people are put in . He tells how the company chooses to make all the equipment as easy to manage as possible so that they dont have to train their employees to make the food on the menu. This information alone shows you what is on the minds of these companies. Most of them all have the same idea but they express them in differents but in the end they all end up displaying negetive effects.

clarification: While reading this chunk did you , at all , feel as if
these fast food corporations were prejudice ?

application: Did it surprise you at all when the author mentioned
that these restaurnats target most teengers?

FAST FOOD NATiON ( post #1 )

In Eric Schlosser's novel Fast Food Nation he exploits and examines the real truth about fast food restaurants. He initially begans to briefly speak about how these restaurants come about and the he includes brief decriptions about their founders. In the attempt to exploit them about their "harmful advertising" he discussed the approach these many companies take to reach out to their younger customers. He uses McDonald's as a example advertiser. He says, " McDonald's spends more money advertising and marketing than any other brand. As a result it has replaced Coca-Cola as the world's most famous brand. McDonald's operates more playgorunds than any other private entity in the United States ( introduction : page 4 ) . " This quote alone gives you a general of how these vendors are targeting Americans. In my opinion Schlosser's main focus for this novel is to reveal the naked truth about these vendors.

clarification: In Schlosser's opinion , what do most of the

food resturants have in common ?

application: Did your prior knowledge about fast food restaurants change after reading the first two chunks of Fast Food Nation ?
