FAST FOOD NATiON ( post #3 - what's in the meat )

Concluding the non-fiction novel Fast Food Nation, Schlosser reveals all the secrets about the packaged meat and what is hidden inside. He finally begins to talk about the deadly disease Escherichia coli O157:H7, " a virulent and potientially lethal foodbourne pathogen " . He immediately gives many examples about violent cases of E. coli O157:h7 break outs. While discussing the case of Lee Harding , an innocent individual who was infected by the E. coli O157:H7 virus, they discover that this deadly pathogen is rarely found in chicken and more often found in beef , which is the number one source in fast food restaurants. He also says " Children under the age of five, the elderly, and the people with impaired immune systems are the most likely to suffer from illnesses caused by E. coli O157:H7 .He then gives an example of how infected beef is distributed in school cafeterias running the risk of infecting innocent children . As an example he tells about an 11 year old boy who became sick aftereating a hamburger at school . The meat processing company from which the meat came from confirmed the presence of the E. coli virus in their meat. It was reported that the meat processing plant was so filthy that inspectors withdrew an appointed inspection. Ironically , the the company's owner ( Frank Bauer ) committed suicide the next day. " Throughout discussing this deadly virus Schlosser also touches upon other deadly pathogens such as Salmonella , Listeria monocytogenes , Staphylococcus aureus , and Clostridium perfringens , which are pathogens which can possibly hospitalize and make an individual seriously ill . Leaving this topic in the air , Schlosser begans to talk about americanized countries such as Germany . These countries are known for franchizing different fast food restaurants and adopting the same habits as Americans.
